Determining interests and priorities among students, staff and key partners.

Planning School Programs

A school district received a planning grant to enhance their school lunch program. Through evaluation with PIE, they were able to identify the key interests and priorities among their key partners and students.
Organization: Burwell Public Schools

Background

Burwell Public Schools received a planning grant from the USDA to develop a Farm to School Program. Although there was interest among students and staff for the program – which would allow them to enhance their school lunchroom program and provide more educational opportunities – there was limited information on what types of activities would be most beneficial and feasible to do.

Evaluation Approach

PIE staff developed and implemented two surveys. An online survey was sent to students in middle and high school about the school lunch program and their interest in various nutritional activities and education opportunities. A survey was also sent to key partners to assess the barriers and opportunities for acquiring and using locally sourced foods.

Results

Summary reports were developed for both of the surveys. An executive summary outlining the full project was also shared with the district, which outlined four key recommendations to consider for moving forward with the Farm to School program in their district. The data was also utilized to apply for an implementation grant the following year.
